Self-painted mask
Masks don’t protect.
For several days, according to the recommendations of the Polish government, being in public space you have to wear masks. It’s impossible now to introduce widespread vaccination on the coronavirus. I decided to prepare for a new fashion which must be promoted. Of course, there is misunderstanding about this. People still think that the mask would protect them from the coronavirus. Of course, that’s not enough. It is not protection against infection, but promoting widely understood hygiene and remembering to keep a distance, a limited trust everyone around. A mask should remind us that there is an invisible threat, and it should be taken seriously. Do not touch in public space everything what exist if there is no need. Do not touch the face and do not sneeze on others. The mask should remind us about it.

Hands in space.
Unfortunately, I see that people still do not understand the seriousness of the situation. Today I went to the parcel locker to pick up the package. On the playground in front of my flat, the children played on the slide. Cheerful teenagers were sitting in the open gym space, although in masks and keeping distance about 1,5 metres. We are not able to get used to living in a new reality, so it is introducing gradually. The bans are introduced to prepare ourselves for new habits. This is very important and we must learn new ways of spending time outside.
Anyway zero waste.
According to zero waste idea, I am going to use reusable masks. I stocked up on special fabric markers, fabric liners and pastel dye sticks. By ironing the fabric the colour is set. Seller send me white masks that were supposed to be from the microfiber. However, they remind me more of the material for diaper (tetra). They are white, so it is possible to color them anyway. Nothing will be wasted. The mask is double, which means that you can put in the middle for example filter. The advantage of this mask is that it is light and delicate. Ha! I have even the impression that it passes the air. Great for warm upcoming days! I have used the pattern from the leaves of a palm tree, on another mask I have drawn a paragraph.
Here I am posting a link from another article if you need other zero waste inspirations. CLICK HERE
List of necessary things to create your own pattern:
- white mask (you can use a white t-shirt if you have one at home, there will be even more zero waste, because you can sew the mask yourself at home 😉
- fabric markers or liners
- pastels for fabrics
- cardboard
- scissors
- breakfast paper
- iron
Instructions of painting the mask:
Step 1.
Find inspiration. Browse books, coloring books, the internet to find your favorite pattern. The simpler the more expressive. It can be anything: Pepa pig, flower or car.
Step 2.
Put a cardboard between layers of fabric. Draw the contours of the image by pencil, or you can do it directly on a fabric mask (if you feel confident).
Step 3.
The mask can be painted whole or you can paint on it a single pattern. Pastels allow you to fill the background of the drawing. It is good not to leave white space free.

Step 4.
Iron the pattern with a fully-powered iron, securing the mask with breakfast paper.
